How to overcome writer’s block

How many times have you endured the notorius writer's block?  Many times, surely, because writer's block occurs in the life of all writers, also just for once, at least.  You are about to write your new article or book and suddenly, you’re blocked in front of the white sheet or your PC desktop. Here is   how writer's block appears.  That is a sort of emotional disorder caused by anxiety, or rather a type of anxiety called performance anxiety. The disorder occurs especially in those authors and writers who are obsessed with perfectionism and want that all they write is great and perfect immediately. Just think what a kind of block I have had,  due to my being an Italian who tries writing in English. Anyway, symptoms of writer’s block are very sneaky and cause enormous suffering both aspiring and established writers. Established writers, above all, may be led to believe they can’t write anymore or that their colleagues are very skilled and more able than themselves. These bad thoughts are caused by a high level of anxiety and a wrong mind pattern that imposes the author must follow perfection in all he writes. Maybe you are very loaded with ideas and energy, but once you are to write, your mind doesn’t work and you can’t write. The sheet remains white all day and you feel desperate and believe you lost your talent for writing. These are the most common emotions that accompany writers suffering from this annoying disorder. To face writer’s block, it is important you don’t fear it, but rather you regard it as a normal moment in your career. To not be overwhelmed by writer’s block, a second advice is: does not fear to make mistakes. Writing is another activity you can change and edit at any moment. To avoid writer’s block, you should also rest when you feel too tired. If you are living a bad moment in your life, don’t force yourself to write at any cost, but go out for a walk and remove your bad thoughts and concerns. Perhaps you don’t know that to learn a good writing and overcome writer’s block, the secret is: read instead of write. When you perceive that writing is getting harder, stop to work your piece or book and read a good book. Our mind is prompt to receive good stimulus from reading. Moreover, this activity relaxes our mind and empower our writing skills. When you are ready to resume writing, forget your anxiety and perfectionism and let yourself make mistakes and correct them. Remember: mistakes are human, it is perfectionism to be diabolic. About perfection, I can say that is owned only by God, but you and me are writers only, not gods. Read before and then write. Read back your text and don’t fear to correct and improve it several times. During the writer’s block, also try to seek stuff who works like a muse for you and that provides new ideas to be used in your writing. The muse can be your cat, your preferred book or anything else.
